Join me in my efforts to support Arthritis Foundation, Tennessee Chapter!

Some 15 years before her death, my mother was diagnosed with Rhematoid Arthritis. I can still remember vividly the car ride back from the doctor’s office where she had been told she had this crippling disease. I cried all the way home. At that time I really didn’t know what my mother or my family would be facing in the coming years.
Just like the sudden onset of symptoms, Mother’s RA progressed very rapidly. The disease presented in her knees, hands and ankles. Mother’s rhematologist tried drugs like Methotrexate, Gold, Prednisone, Cortisone injections, etc. to ease the effects of this disease. When those drugs did not work, Mother agreed to participate in experimental clinical drug programs. She had arthroscopic surgery on her knees. Mother was not a candidate for knee replacement surgery because at that time they would not perform the surgery since she had two equally bad knees. Mother eventually sold the ladies clothing store she owned, her lifelong dream, due to the disease. The side effects of all the arthritis drugs that kept her able to get out of bed caused many other physical complications ultimately leading to her death. I watched my mother suffer 15 years with this disease although I never heard her complain one day. My dad retired early to care for mother, she was his life.
On December 6, 2008 I am walking in memory of my mother whose life I so deeply admire. I will never in my lifetime exhibit the courage that she lived day after day. I also walk in honor of spouses and children that watched their loved ones suffer with the effects of this horrible disease. Mother dreamed of a day that there would be a cure for arthritis. Unfortunately, mother did not live to see this dream fulfilled. Will you support me in my walk to help find a cure for arthritis?
